ARCADIA PICTURE BOOKS ABOUT THE PASCACK VALLEY
(These may all be available at local bookstores and on-line book sellers)

"Images Of River Vale"
By Edmund Moderacki

This book by River Vale resident Edmund Moderacki explores a historically rich community that has been known over the years as the Overkill Neighborhood, Harrington Township, Washington Township, and the borough of Eastwood. One of the first settled areas of the Kakiat Patent, River Vale was the scene of the Baylor Massacre, New Jersey's bloodiest skirmish of the Revolutionary War. The area's fine farmland enabled some of Bergen County's earliest settlers to flourish. Strong streams provided power for the mills and the famed Collignon chair factory.

"Images Of Park Ridge"
By Chris Sagona

Park Ridge portrays the uncommon history of a North Jersey town that is known far beyond its borders for the part it played in early finances. One of the early settlers invented the wampum machine, a device that polished shells that were used as currency. Park Ridge was also known for its self-sufficient artesian well water system. And around 1870, it had the premier amusement center in Bergen County: Island Park. Over the years Park Ridge has had its share of well-known residents, including former President Richard M. Nixon.

Author: Chris Sagona has been a reporter and an editor, and has also served as a trustee of the Pascack Valley History Project. For her work with local newspapers and magazines, she has received the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists Award for Distinguished Public Service in Journalism and Best Feature Writing, as well as the New Jersey Press Award for First Amendment Writing. For Park Ridge, she has borrowed stunning images from generous community members, police and fire officials, and houses of worships. By combining these images with narrative, she has created a stirring tribute to the town and its people.

Available for a limited time from the friends of the Park Ridge Library. Check library for more info.

The Hackensack Water Works
by Clifford W. Zink

The Hackensack Water Works, located on Van Buskirk Island, in Oradell Borough, was listed on Preservation New Jersey’s ten most endangered sites list in 1996. Since then, and through the tireless advocacy effort of the Water Works Conservancy, the site is still standing, but awaiting its rebirth. The written and pictorial documentation of this industrial resource has provided a catalyst for new thinking and all indications are that a preservation plan is underway. While the site’s owner, Bergen County had been less than enthusiastic about keeping this resource intact, this book has helped to shift momentum into a positive direction.

Available from The Waterworks Conservancy in Oradell.
